Chippendale Style Cabinet with Tombstone Doors and Drawers
This curly cherry book press was designed and built in the Chippendale style using elements from a china press
and a tall desk from the late 18th century. The approximate dimensions of this piece are 75 3/4" high x 45" wide x
15 7/8" deep, with a usable shelf depth will be approximately 13". The book press was constructed using wide
matched cherry for the primary wood - with beautiful, highly figured curly cherry for the raised door panels and
crotch cherry drawer fronts. This bookpress stands on ogee bracket feet and features traditional waist and crown
molding. Hand cut dovetail drawers are constructed with cockbeaded fronts (solid maple drawer sides and a solid
poplar bottom). Solid cherry backboards with shiplap construction are used in the upper cabinet section. Three
shelves are built into the upper cabinet via fixed construction with sliding dovetail joinery. Doors are pinned
mortise and tenon joinery with tombstone upper panels. The hardware used is reproduction quality brass
hardware with locks on the drawers and door. This piece was finished with hand rubbed wiping varnish - then
waxed and buffed to a satin finish. The overall size of the cabinet can be customized to your space requirements
and storage needs. This cabinet works equally well as a dining room piece for china storage. Additionally, the
cabinet could easily be redesigned to accommodate entertainment equipment.
This cabinet could easily be built from Maple, Walnut, Mahogany or Cherry.
